Classes just had to go and ruin this great week of TV premieres by starting, but we'll ignore that for now in favor of the awesomeness that began last night.
Before I go into the TV, though, I just have to say how thrilled I am that adorable Abigail Breslin got an Oscar nom for Little Miss Sunshine. She is just such a genuinely cute kid and held her own in a movie full of great actors, and I, for one, was so freakin' excited for her when I heard that she's nominated. I was kinda sad that Borat didn't get more recognition (and the nod it did get seemed odd, considering the movie - "Best Adapted Screenplay"? Hmm.), but Abigail's nomination totally made me happy.
Now, back to TV:
Prison Break and Heroes both came back last night, with some pretty kickass results. The odd triangle of Linc, Michael and Kellerman is making for pretty good times (except for that whole part where their plan shot himself in the head), and considering Mahone's rogue actions I wouldn't be surprised to see him on their side at some point, too. Or maybe he'll just continue to be a genius psychopath against them, which will probably be equally as fun.
Also worth mentioning on Prison Break: T-Bag just gets creepier and creepier. His attempts to be a "family" with the woman he'd been hunting were just downright disturbing, and it doesn't look like things are going to get any better for his poor hostages. Eep. Also, something happened with C-Note, and Bellick is soooo in trouble at Fox River.
Heroes brought us in two weeks after the last episode, with Peter still in a confusing dream-riddled coma and Hiro, Ando and Isaac back in New York. Best part of the night? When Hiro recognized Nathan Petrelli at Isaac's apartment excitedly as "Flying man!!!" Hiro = awesome, constantly. Even when he's stealing ancient swords that turn out to be fakes.
There was so much going on in this episode, and all of it was good. Mohinder is starting to push forward with trying to find the people on his father's list, and that can only lead to very good TV. Claire, feeling very alone, decided to repeat history (aka remake her "suicide" tape) to win back her memory-erased friend. And Niki/Jessica, in a very awesome performance by Ali Larter, fought for control in a series of weird "talking to my other personality" moments. Plus, she broke a guard's stick in half. Seemingly as Niki and not Jessica. Superstrength, perhaps?
Tonight: Veronica Mars returns from hiatus! Superyay!
The best thing about last night? A shoutout to the oh-so-awesome Alamo Drafthouse on Heroes. As an Austinite, that totally made the episode for me.
Not to say that the episode wasn't good - because it was. We got some backstory on several of the heroes, including getting to see how Claire became a cheerleader, Eden's bad-girl past, and the wreck that put Nathan in a wheelchair. We also finally got a good look at the formerly nerdy Sylar, former watch-fixer turned brain-stealing villian. Unfortunately, we also found out that Hiro wasn't able to save Charlie. And even if he had been able to, she probably would have been dead soon anyway from a blood clot in her brain. Which is supersad, because she was pretty cool, and had one of the neatest powers so far.
Prison Break also had a fabulous episode, sending themselves into hiatus with a (literal) bang. Just when it looked like Michael and Linc might be completely screwed, Kellerman turned on the conspiracy, shot Mahone and declared his intentions to take down the president. Now that's just cool.
In the other two million plots interweaving on this show, T-Bag killed a few more people to get to his ultimate target - the woman who turned him down by turning him in - and Bellick ended up back in Fox River, hilariously rooming with Avocado, who fans of the first season will remember as Tweener's creepy roommate. That's called karma, Brad. (Honestly I'm having a little trouble believing this plotline, what with the lack of forensic evidence and the fact that Bellick was pretty obviously in the hospital when Geary was killed, but... whatever. It's kinda fun.)
Tonight - the first mystery finale of Veronica Mars! I'm way too excited.
Well, if you've been watching Heroes at all, you know the rest.
Last night was the big "Save the cheerleader" episode, and for the most part it didn't disappoint. Hiro may have been conspicuously absent, but as promised, some of the heroes finally started to meet up - Peter headed to Texas to save Claire, although both he and Sylar mistook another cheerleader for her first, and it looks like he succeeded - even if he did get arrested in the process. We also finally got a glimpse of Sylar's face, and since Eden used her apparently very strong telepathy to capture him at the end, it looks like we may get to see more of him soon.
Peter was especially fantastic in this episode, going to Texas even though he knew from Isaac's painting it would lead to his death, and facing Sylar pretty fearlessly. And was I the only one who thought Claire and Peter had some great chemistry? I know that's kind of, well, illegal... so maybe we'll just call it friend chemistry.
Over on Prison Break, Sara kicked all kinds of ass, worming her way out of drowning, burning Kellerman in the chest with an iron, jumping out of a window and sewing up her own wounds. It's nice to see a smart, tough girl on this show, which is usually so male-centric (not that I normally mind...).
The really big stuff came at the end, though, as Michael's call to Sara was intercepted by Mahone and a gun, and Sucre's plane to Mexico seemed to be about to run into trouble. This show just leaves me hanging every week - I don't know how I'm going to bear the hiatus.
I know, I know, it's still a week until Thanksgiving, but I don't think it's too early of a list of things I'm thankful for - especially when it was triggered by the FABULOUSNESS of #1.
1. According to E's TV Diva Kristin, Veronica Mars has been picked up for another 7 episodes! EEEEEE!!!! So, okay, that's only 20 eps and not a full-season 22, but I'll take what I can get, and more Veronica is definitely something to be thankful for.
2. The continuing awesomeness of Ugly Betty - I love these characters so very, very much. Justin continues to be hilariously flamboyant (athletic cup turned Phantom mask? Awesome.), Marc and Amanda are hilariously bitchy (and, last night, hilariously drunk while performing musical numbers in couture dresses), and even Daniel and his man-whore ways are making me smile these days.
3. Izzie and Alex on Grey's Anatomy. These two have so much chemistry, even just as friends, that the rest of the show just seems inconsequential. Alex has been the highlight of every episode this season for me, and pairing him with Izzie again just made everything that much more awesome.
4. The OC, in it's fourth episode of the new season, is... still good. Meaning that the first three solid, funny, moving episodes were potentially not a fluke. In fact, could it be getting better and better? Seth and Summer are sizzling again, Kirsten and Sandy aren't having a stupid fight, and even Ryan and Taylor found some pretty hot chemistry. I never thought I would say those words, but... that kiss was pretty damn sexy.
5. Pie. Because everything remotely connected to Thanksgiving should end with pie.
So, really, those are just things that I'm thankful for from the last 24 hours, because I never really got around to mentioning how much I ADORED this week's Bones - how much I love Angela and Hodgins together, and how my little fangirl heart squealed with joy when a freaked-out Booth raced over to dig Bones out of the dirt. I also could have included my excitement over next week's fantastic-looking Heroes, or how psyched I am that all those shows that seemed to be having bad seasons last year are stepping it up this year (Desperate Housewives and the already-mentioned OC, for example). Or Wentworth Miller's continuing hotness. But if I really put down ALL the TV things I'm thankful for this year, well, this list would just get ridiculous.
I think I kind of hate November sweeps. Everything is just so. damn. good. There are cliffhangers all over the place. And even all the previews look fantastic. It's just gooey, wonderful, heart-attack-inducing TV overload.
Tonight definitely proved that with a solid two hours of excellent TV, thanks to Prison Break and Heroes.
There were some great lines in tonight's Prison Break - Michael's explanation of why he broke his brother out of prison ("My brother got me a catcher's mitt for my 14th birthday - I owed him.") and Kellerman's snide introduction to Sara before he commenced with the torturing ("Hello, my name is not Lance, and I am not an addict.") Less cool was T-Bag pulling off his reattached hand to get away from the police - eeeew. And shouldn't he have bled to death by now? It's seeming more and more implausible that he's still alive...
My favorite moment of the episode had to be Sucre busting in and saving Michael. Their friendship is just so awesome. And while I'm a litte skeptical of Linc and Michael's dad (especially after Michael recognized him), and worried about LJ being sent off with a strange woman, I can't wait to see where this storyline is going.
Heroes gave us a bit more insight into Claire's dad and Eden - seems like maybe they're not SO evil after all, although they're definitely treading gray area. And we found out exactly when Sylar is supposed to go after Claire - meaning next week, I think, is the big "Save the Cheerleader - Save the World" episode. Excuse me while I freak out.
Meanwhile, Hiro made a new friend - a sweet Texas waitress with some secret powers of her own. Unfortunately, Sylar showed up to slice her head open, which proved too much for Hiro, who decided to try that whole time-bending thing to save her. Since he didn't show back up in the present like he was supposed to, it's kind of unclear whether that went well. Even though we certainly don't need any new characters, I almost wish he would save her - she and Hiro were supercute together. Sigh.
Over in India, Mohinder did a whole bunch of confusing stuff, and had some freaky dreams, and found out he had a sister. Not sure where his story is going, but I get the feeling there's a big point (and Mohinder's pretty cute) so I'll bear with the confusion to find out what's up.
If there wasn't a week of exciting TV ahead (Veronica Mars and Bones look especially good this week), I think I would be going crazy waiting for next Monday.
Well, I guess the question if whether the kid of two people with superpowers has superpowers has been answered... at least in Micah's case. It's unclear exactly what his power is, but he did manage to fix a pay phone with a wiggle of his cute little finger, so I think we can assume it's technology related. He was probably the best part of last night's Heroes - I love that he immediately knew it was Niki's alterego, and not actually his mom, on the phone.
The Petrellis also had an interesting night. We were finally introduced to Nathan's wheelchair-bound wife, and when Peter showed up for a brunch meant to help bolster Nathan's campaign he actually helped his brother out. But Nathan is getting more devious by the week - it sounded like he got Isaac's painting from Linderman on the phone, but he told Peter he couldn't. Hmmm...
Over on Prison Break, the much-anticipated Michael/Sara reunion was pretty bittersweet... Sara isn't quite over that whole "her dad being killed" thing, and Mahone managed to catch up with them just as she was beginning to warm up to Michael. Which resulted in another great Michael-Mahone scene, with Mahone locked in a cage and Michael informing them that he will always win. Mr. Scofield may be speaking too soon, though - Mahone's mention of knowning Michael was heading to Panama seemed to catch him off guard.
Linc and LJ managed to get away from the cops with a little help from some strangers claiming they were working with Linc's dad, but Linc's distrust of them wasn't too misplaced - while his father did show up and many of them seem ot be legit, the guy who discussed killing them on the phone with Kim? Probably not so much. Should make for an interesting time next week.
I need to start having some herbal tea on hand on Monday nights to keep me from completely stressing out. Are Prison Break and Heroes in cahoots to give me a heart attack, or what?
Let's just hope Linc and LJ's capture works out in the next episode or two, because I don't know if I can stand them being in custody for long. After just having finished watching the first season on DVD, I will be pissed if Linc ends up back on death row after everything Michael did to get him out of there. I know, realistically, that they won't do that to me, but I'm worried now.
Speaking of Michael, his phone call to Mahone - from Mahone's ex-wife's phone - was the highlight of the episode. Mahone may be freakishly smart, but he is no match for Michael's big brain. Of course, the fact that Mahone seems to be certifiably insane and Michael seems to have figured out how to play on that helps a bit. Michael's call freaked him out enough to send him scrambling to dig up the corpse in his backyard... in broad daylight. Not so smart, really.
On the Heroes side of things, we got a bit deeper into Niki's story, with her accused-murderer husband showing up inside while the police waited for him outside. Niki let him stay, and seemed to believe his protestations of innocence - potentially because it was her alterego that framed him. Which leads to the question - if she had $2 million in the attic this entire time, why did her alterego let her borrow money from a mobster? Hard to tell if we'll find out the answer, as Niki's fate (after having DL stick his hand through her body) is a bit up in the air.
The plot thickened with Claire's somewhat creepy dad bringing home her (fake) biological parents, and the revelation that Mohinder's overly helpful neighbor is somewhat unsuprisingly in cahoots with him. Not sure why she showed up at Isaac's door at the end of the episode, but I suppose we'll find out soon. And since Isaac, Peter, Hiro and Ando have now talked, hopefully we're close to a group meeting and more revelations on why it's so important for them to "save the cheerleader."
I didn't realize how much I missed Prison Break until tonight's episode started. But I really, really did. And tonight was definitely not a disappointment. T-Bag just keeps getting creepier (and I seriously hope the woman he's after had the good sense to move). Michael and Sucre's friendship is really heartwarming and feels genuine, and I didn't believe for a second that Sucre would actually turn on Michael or that Michael would leave Sucre behind to die. I'm glad I was right in both instances.
And I'm glad that both Linc and Sara started using their brains - Linc managed to collect LJ without getting caught, and Sara managed to elude being killed multiple times, although in one instance it unfortunately meant the casualty of a civilian woman who conveniently looked an awful lot like her. She also began to figure out Michael's notes, which hopefully means a reunion is in the future, although the fact that Kellerman has the last piece to her puzzle is a bit worrisome. As is the fact that Mahone is apparently involved in the conspiracy (which just keeps getting bigger and bigger), at least by virtue of being blackmailed, and has been ordered to kill, not capture, all 8 escapees. Eep!
It was really a night of great TV, with Prison Break's stellar return followed by a stellar Heroes. Nathan Petrelli really began to shine in this one - not only did he meet up with Hiro, manage an amazing flight, and show off some fabulous abs, he coerced $4 million out of some pretty scary people to help him win his campaign. So he's not quite a clear-cut good guy, but that just makes him that much more interesting.
And while I'm mightily disappointed in Mohinder for going the way of the skeptic, I'm glad that Claire's creepy, questionable father took action against JockRapist. Erasing his memory is so much cooler than just killing him. I'm still not sure what's up with creepy father, but he's getting more intriguing with each episode.
But of course, some of the best parts of the show belonged to Hiro, who is simply awesome. His excitement over waffles after being beaten up and dumped in the middle of the desert, and his delight over seeing Nathan fly, were hilarious, and his friendship with Ando (who finally got to meet his Internet stripper) keeps getting better.
And to think, last year I thought there was nothing to watch on Monday nights.
