My immune system has been keeping me away this week, but so much has happened that I just had to comment.
1. RIP Sheriff Lamb. I'll certainly miss the bumbling sarcasm of everyone's favorite ass. At least he went out just as incompetent as he came in - shooting his own reflection in the mirror? Hee. As a big fan of the actor (one of the nicest guys, ever), I hope we see a lot more of him on TV, soon.
2. The last ten minutes of so of the series finale of the O.C. really got to me. I've watched this show from the beginning, and even though I almost gave up on it last season I have really enjoyed season four. I'm glad we got glimpses of both past and future for these characters, who I've loved and hated for the past four years. I almost teared up watching Seth and Summer finally get married, Julie graduate from college, Ryan become an architect and bring everything full circle by offering help to a kid in need... sigh. I'm going to miss this show.
3. I'm seriously not understanding the appeal of Sundance on American Idol. Sure, he was pretty good in the auditions, but he has totally sucked it up since then. Why did he not go home last night? Other than my annoyance over that, I wasn't really surprised by anyone that went home, and although I still like some of the boys, I think I'm rooting for a Diva-off this year. So many really talented girls, and their night just blew the boys out of the water this week. The guys are going to need to step it up.
4. I think I have a new addiction - why did no one tell me how fantastic Supernatural is? I just Netflixed the first disc, and I loved it. The pretty, the snarky brotherly love, the cheesy low-budget X-Files plots... I just so cannot wait to watch more of this show.
And I'm so very glad.
I know I'm not the only one relieved that the House's Tritter arc is over. Sure, in real life, I'd prefer not to have a doctor who's also a jerk and an addict, but it makes for damn good TV and Dr. House is one of the most appealing assholes around. He's a lot more fun to watch when he's popping pills and making unnecessarily snarky remarks.
In much sadder news that I was unable to discuss earlier due to some laptop issues, The O.C. has been officially cancelled. We've got til the end of February to watch what has been one of the O.C.'s strongest seasons yet, and then it's done. I have to say, sad as I am, I'm glad the show is going out on a high note and I hope the rest of the season continues to be this great.
Not only was there a new episode of the OC this week in the midst of so many other hiatuses, it sounds like we're getting one NEXT week, too. Fox is actually making me happy with their scheduling choices for once. Huh.
This year's Chrismukkah episode was no Season 1 Chrismukkah (that one's hard to match), and not really quite as good as some of the past few episodes, but it had some great moments. Sure, the "Wonderful Life" theme as shown through coma dreams is kind of a cheesy and overdone idea, but some great details helped save the premise, like Che and Julie carrying on a hilarious affair and Summer as a total bimbo.
Back in actual reality, the Cooper girls kind of stole the show with some great banter about going home to their less affluent relatives for Christmas. Also excellent was Julie threatening Veronica Townsend to get her to the hospital to support her daughter, proving that she can use her powers of manipulation for good. She continues to be one of the best things about this show, and even Kaitlin is starting to grow on me.
But what really brought a sense of true Chrismukkah spirit to last night's OC was seeing the entire group crowded around Ryan at the end as he woke up. Now THAT'S how you're supposed to do Chrismukkah in the OC. Awww.
Before last night's very funny OC, I don't remember the last time I saw Ryan Atwood quite so happy. He smiled. He made amused faces. He joked. He fantasized in very amusing ways. He bonded with the Cohens. I remembered why I loved him so much in season 1, before he became constantly mopey, dragged-down-by-Marissa's-issues Ryan.
Apparently quirky Taylor is good for him.
Also cute: Summer's bunny, Pancakes, and Seth's decision to put off college an extra semester to stay with her; Sandy and Kirsten's newfound lack of ridiculous marriage drama; the over-the-top Bullet's admission to being nervous around Julie and just wanting to make her laugh.
Best lines of the night:
Ryan: She paid you to pretend to like her? ...That sounds like Taylor.
Taylor: Just because I want to use your body as a jungle gym doesn't mean that we have to get married.
Seth: Dude, your fantasies are so pedestrian - a sudsy girl? That's... so average.
Ryan: Doesn't mean it's not hot.
Seth: I guess they call them classics for a reason.
Thursday nights are offering me a lot of new shipping possibilities. Betty and Henry on Ugly Betty, Ryan and Taylor on the OC... these are some potentially very cute/hot couples, and I, for one, am enjoying watching all those flying sparks.
Last night's Grey's didn't really offer any new ships, but we did get some great moments. Izzie standing up to McSteamy and earning his respect, Burke talking George through his dad's surgery, Christina standing by Burke at the end after an episode of silence between the two, the Chief breaking down and yelling at Burke, Bailey's anger over the lack of punishment for Christina and Burke, Derek's crisis of confidence after finding out his surgery on Burke wasn't so perfect... and, of course, the medical case of the week with the adult conjoined twins, which was... not really as fantastic as the promos were trying to make it out to be, but interesting enough.
My main regret of the night was not being able to watch Scrubs, but there's really only so much I can do when there are three shows competing for my attention. And while I love Scrubs, I didn't see most of last season, so I think I need to do some catching up before I start even trying to watch it live. But as much as I hate that I'm missing Scrubs, it's hard to have too many regrets when Grey's and the OC are just getting better and better by the week.
I know, I know, it's still a week until Thanksgiving, but I don't think it's too early of a list of things I'm thankful for - especially when it was triggered by the FABULOUSNESS of #1.
1. According to E's TV Diva Kristin, Veronica Mars has been picked up for another 7 episodes! EEEEEE!!!! So, okay, that's only 20 eps and not a full-season 22, but I'll take what I can get, and more Veronica is definitely something to be thankful for.
2. The continuing awesomeness of Ugly Betty - I love these characters so very, very much. Justin continues to be hilariously flamboyant (athletic cup turned Phantom mask? Awesome.), Marc and Amanda are hilariously bitchy (and, last night, hilariously drunk while performing musical numbers in couture dresses), and even Daniel and his man-whore ways are making me smile these days.
3. Izzie and Alex on Grey's Anatomy. These two have so much chemistry, even just as friends, that the rest of the show just seems inconsequential. Alex has been the highlight of every episode this season for me, and pairing him with Izzie again just made everything that much more awesome.
4. The OC, in it's fourth episode of the new season, is... still good. Meaning that the first three solid, funny, moving episodes were potentially not a fluke. In fact, could it be getting better and better? Seth and Summer are sizzling again, Kirsten and Sandy aren't having a stupid fight, and even Ryan and Taylor found some pretty hot chemistry. I never thought I would say those words, but... that kiss was pretty damn sexy.
5. Pie. Because everything remotely connected to Thanksgiving should end with pie.
So, really, those are just things that I'm thankful for from the last 24 hours, because I never really got around to mentioning how much I ADORED this week's Bones - how much I love Angela and Hodgins together, and how my little fangirl heart squealed with joy when a freaked-out Booth raced over to dig Bones out of the dirt. I also could have included my excitement over next week's fantastic-looking Heroes, or how psyched I am that all those shows that seemed to be having bad seasons last year are stepping it up this year (Desperate Housewives and the already-mentioned OC, for example). Or Wentworth Miller's continuing hotness. But if I really put down ALL the TV things I'm thankful for this year, well, this list would just get ridiculous.
So, oddly enough, the OC is good again. Of course, now no one's watching. But tonight's episode, combined with last night's, made up two good nights of Newport drama and humor. As much as I was not a fan of Marissa, her death has created some really great moments, so I suppose I'm... glad that she existed? Hmm.
Taylor is an especially great addition to the cast, and I can't wait to see what they do with her. I'm also really glad that they wrapped up the Volchok situation without too much drawn-out drama. And that Ryan and Julie seem to maybe be beginning the process of moving on. Actually, it seems to me like Summer is the one right now who's having the most trouble dealing - I don't want to see the "healing from Marissa's death" plots to go on forever, but I'd like to see where they're going with Summer's issues.
It's been awhile since I've said this about the OC, but I'm actually looking forward to the next episode, and even the rest of the season. It's a nice feeling.
Wow, Thursday nights are getting crowded. The OC returned for its fourth season - in a slot that pits it against Grey's and CSI, two of the top-rated shows of any night, as well as other "teen" shows like Supernatural. And, unfortunately for those of us who were hoping we could just stop watching (aka me), The OC is good again. Like, really good. This premiere was up there with very best episodes of the last few years, and even arguably on the level of Season 1 OC (aka really good). Everyone is dealing with Marissa's death in their own way - Ryan by being dark and angsty and, well, cage-fighting, Julie by popping pills and alternating between trying to keep herself busy and lying in bed all day, Summer by turning into a hippie...
All of the characters and actors were fully on this episode. Julie and Ryan were heartbreaking, as were the Cohens attempts to get through to Ryan. And Summer's protestations of having dealt with Marissa's death crumbled when she was unable to stay in the room she used to share with Marissa, or deal with life in Newport in all, and chose to fly directly back to Brown after helping Ryan. Seems like she and Seth could be headed for rocky times.
But what was really heartening about this episode was the fact that it made me care about these characters again and want to see what happens to them next week. I'm hopeful that the downhill slide of the last two seasons (and especially last season) has come to a halt. Maybe we can even recapture the greatness of Season 1.
Also on TV last night... Over on Grey's, Christina is getting herself deeper and deeper into helping Burke, and it looks like it all might crash down pretty soon, with Bailey realizing that it was Christina, and not Burke, that bumped her out of a surgery. Izzie returned to Seattle Grace somewhat awkwardly, but I'm glad they dealt with the legal aspects of her return instead of just pushing her straight back in - that would have been highly unrealistic. George and Meredith tried to replace their respective best friends (Izzie and Christina) for each other, as said friends have been a little distracted, and Derek's sister showed up to bond with Addison and Mark and make Derek as uncomfortable as possible. But, most importantly, Alex continued to be awesome, saving a baby's life and making me love him more and more. He also had the honor of the best line of the night, watching Christina alter the surgery board -- "Maybe I should sleep with Burke."
On Ugly Betty, Betty and Hilda tried to deal with their father's confession of being in the country illegally, leading to some pretty funny stuff as they tried to raise money for a lawyer by selling Herbalux at Mode, and coming to a head when the girl's found out that the reason Ignacio never applied for a greencard is the murder of a man who had been mistreating their mother. Amanda finally gathered up her self-respect and dumped Daniel's sorry ass, and Justin was sadly absent. Salma Hayek, however, was not, playing the editor of a new Meade magazine and becoming a worthy adversary for Mr. Daniel Meade.
Whew.
I don't know if anything will ever match up to the greatness of Veronica Mars, Season 1, but Season 3 seems to be getting better with each new episode. I admit to a smidge of concern when they introduced the idea of Logan's new half-brother - but, in true Veronica Mars fashion, they took it in a direction I wasn't expecting and made it an interesting story and a chance for Logan to grow a bit. After everything that boy has been through, someone needs to give him a damn hug.
I really hope that didn't count as one of Wallace's contracted episodes as a regular - if so, that two seconds we saw him was a waste. Come back, Wallace! And bring Mac back with you!
Parker, while justifiably upset in general, needs to stop blaming Veronica for everything. I liked that Veronica forced her way in to talk to Parker in an open, honest way that could get through to her. Unfortunately, seeing Veronica with the frat boys turned her opinions right back around. But Veronica's assessment of the situation - that it's better to have found the actual criminal than a scapegoat - was right on target. I still have absolutely no idea who the rapist is, but I'm actually liking the three-mystery season better than I thought I might. Knowing that this mystery is going to have a resolution in the next handful of episodes is kind of comforting. It worries me to have a serial rapist around all of my lovely Neptunians...
The ratings also worry me, although from what I hear we're doing better than last year. If the CW would just order a full season and put fan fears to rest, that would be so excellent. *knock on wood*
On a completely different topic, what is Fox smoking, keeping The O.C. in a timeslot against Grey's AND CSI, two of the biggest shows on TV? Are they purposefully trying to kill it? That wouldn't surprise me, considering their horrible scheduling followed by cancellations in the past, but I actually have some hope for Season 4, sans Marissa, and I'd like to see it have a shot. There was a time when the O.C. was awesome. I miss it.
